Distal Shaft of the Tibiotarsus of the Dodo
Kan beschikbaarheid voor afhalen niet laden
This bone fragment represents the distal shaft of a tibiotarsus of the dodo, one of the principal weight-bearing elements of the leg. Although incomplete, the proportions, cortical thickness and internal structure allow secure attribution to Raphus cucullatus.
The surface displays the characteristic Mare aux Songes mineralisation, with dark brown to ochre tones and a slightly glossy patina resulting from prolonged burial in the marsh deposits. Areas of exposed cancellous bone are visible at the fracture points, consistent with natural breakage and long-term subfossilisation. The specimen shows no evidence of restoration.
Formerly part of a North German collection of minerals and fossils, the bone reflects the historic role of Northern Germany — particularly the port cities of Bremen and Hamburg — as gateways through which natural history material from overseas entered European collections.
